How it works

The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination has two objective papers of 200 marks each. General Studies Paper I has 100 questions worth 2 marks each; CSAT (Paper II) has 80 questions worth 2.5 marks each. In both, one-third of a question's marks is deducted for a wrong answer — 0.667 in Paper I and about 0.833 in CSAT — and unattempted questions score nothing.

Only Paper I counts towards the cut-off that decides who moves on to the Mains. CSAT is qualifying: you need at least 33% of its marks, which is 66 out of 200, but its score is not added to your Paper I total. The calculator therefore reports the Paper I score as the main figure and checks CSAT separately against 66.

The cut-off for Paper I is announced after each year's exam and is not predicted here. If the Commission cancels a question or accepts alternative answers, official marks can differ from this arithmetic. Assumptions and limits

  • Marks and penalties of the Prelims as described for recent years: 100 × 2 and 80 × 2.5, one-third negative marking, CSAT qualifying at 33%.
  • Cancelled or re-keyed questions can change the official result.
  • The Paper I cut-off is declared each year and is not predicted.
