Formula
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)cumulative = (previous GPA × previous credits + term quality points) ÷ (previous credits + term credits)
- Quality points = grade points × credits
Multiply each grade's points by the course credits, add up, and divide by total credits.
Worked example
Three courses
- Value of an A+
- A+ = 4.0 (most schools)
- Grade and credits for each course
- A, 3 B, 4 A-, 3
GPA
3.51
Credits this term: 10
Quality points: 35.1
How it works
An A (4.0) in a 3-credit course, a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course and an A− (3.7) in a 3-credit course give 12 + 12 + 11.1 = 35.1 quality points over 10 credits, a GPA of 3.51. A longer course moves your GPA more than a shorter one because credits are the weights.
Letter grades use the common 4.0 scale with plus and minus (A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 and so on); some schools differ, for instance by scoring an A+ as 4.3 or by not awarding a D−, so check with your registrar. A semester GPA is the same as a one-semester CGPA. For the 10-point scale used in India see SGPA Calculator; to turn weighted scores into grades see Weighted Marks and Grade Calculator.
Assumptions and limits
- Pass/fail courses should be left out.
- GPA is rounded to two decimals.
