Formula
L/100 km = 100 ÷ (km/L)mpg (US) = km/L × 2.352146…mpg (UK) = km/L × 2.824809…
- The US gallon is 3.785411784 L; the imperial gallon is 4.54609 L.
km/L and L/100 km are reciprocals, so one rises as the other falls.
Worked example
8 L/100 km in km/L
- Value
- 8
- From
- Litres per 100 km (L/100 km)
- To
- Kilometres per litre (km/L)
Litres per 100 km to Kilometres per litre
12.5 km/L
In words: 8 L/100 km = 12.5 km/L
How it works
Most of the world rates cars in litres per 100 km (smaller is better) while India often quotes km per litre and the US quotes miles per US gallon (larger is better). Because L/100 km is the reciprocal of km/L, the conversion is a division, not a multiplication: 20 km/L is 100 ÷ 20 = 5 L/100 km.
UK miles per gallon use the larger imperial gallon, so the same car shows about 20% more mpg in the UK than the US — 30 mpg (US) is 36 mpg (UK). The page lists both separately. Zero isn't accepted because it would mean infinite consumption. See also Volume Converter and Length Converter.
Assumptions and limits
- Figures are theoretical conversions; real-world economy depends on conditions.
