How it works

Markdown is a way of writing formatted text in plain characters: a leading # makes a heading, asterisks make bold and italic, hyphens make bullet lists, and pipes make tables. This previewer reads what you type and shows how it will look, then gives you the HTML that corresponds to it, which you can copy.

It is built to be safe to paste into. The text is parsed into a structured tree and drawn with the page's own components, so nothing you type can run as code. Raw HTML such as a script tag is displayed as plain text, links are kept only if they start with http, https or mailto, and images are not loaded in the preview, so no request is made to any other site and no one learns that you opened it. The HTML output escapes every character that has meaning in HTML.

It supports the common core of CommonMark and GitHub-style Markdown — headings, emphasis, strikethrough, inline and fenced code, links, block quotes, nested lists, task lists and tables — and not rarer features such as footnotes, reference-style links or embedded HTML. To escape or unescape characters on their own use the HTML Entity Encoder and Decoder, to count words and characters see the Word Counter, and to tidy the HTML output use the HTML Formatter.

Assumptions and limits

  • Supports a CommonMark/GitHub-style subset; footnotes, reference links and raw HTML are not supported.
  • Input is limited to 50,000 characters.
  • The preview is a close approximation: other renderers can differ in edge cases.

Common questions

Is it safe to paste untrusted Markdown?
Yes. The text is turned into a tree and drawn by the page itself, never inserted as HTML, so scripts and raw HTML are shown as text. Links are limited to http, https and mailto.
