Formula
total = base + bonus + otherdifference = |total B − total A|
- Monthly amounts are multiplied by 12 first.
Add everything each offer pays, then compare the totals.
Worked example
Lower base, higher bonus
- Amounts are per
- Year
- Offer A — base pay
- 1,200,000
- Offer B — base pay
- 1,100,000
- Offer A — bonus
- 100,000
- Offer B — bonus
- 250,000
Offer B pays more
50,000.00
Per year: 50,000.00
Per month: 4,166.67
How much more (relative to the lower offer): 3.85%
How it works
Offer A pays 1,200,000 base plus 100,000 bonus; Offer B pays 1,100,000 plus 250,000. A totals 1,300,000 and B 1,350,000, so B pays 50,000 more a year (4,167 a month) even though its base is lower.
These are gross figures. Different tax treatment, guaranteed versus variable bonus, benefits, commute and growth can outweigh a small gap — and a bonus that isn't guaranteed shouldn't be counted at face value.
